Chickens love to stay busy! Here they are working an outside exercise yard in winter, heavily mulched with old hay. They find interesting things to eat in the hay and at the soil line; the thick organic duff absorbs the poops, preventing their runoff as pollution and retaining their fertility for garden use; and the chickens' scratching reduces the coarse organic material to something between a mulch and a finished compost.
