Here is a mini-application of the forest garden concept (perennial polyculture for maximum diversity, balance, and productivity): In the Spring of 2007, I planted three chestnut trees like this one on the pasture where we range our chickens. Note the heavy kill mulch and the under-planting of comfrey, which will increase soil fertility and eventually provide fodder for the chickens, and cuttings for fertility applications elsewhere. The chooks will help control chestnut weevil, and will benefit from the shade of the trees on scorching summer days.
