Shiitake can be induced to commence growth of mushrooms by soaking, which mimics for the fungus a prolonged period of rain. Soaking time depends on the condition of the logs and how dry the weather has been, from overnight to a couple of days. I use a 100-gallon stock watering tank and weight the logs so they remain completely submerged. After soaking, I rack them along the length of a discarded metal pipe, with sufficient space between logs to make harvest easy.
