In the late summer and fall, I plant cover crops on every garden bed, usually the same day I take off the harvest crop. Cold hardy covers such as these mixed crucifers, small grains, and peas provide fresh cut greens for the flock daily, some of them through the entire winter. Note that we harvest some of the cruciferous cooking greens (mustard, kale, rape, turnip) for the table as well, so the one planting feeds us, feeds the flock, and feeds the soil.
