Part of our Fall, 2005 greenhouse renovation was the installation of two 8x8-ft pens to house chickens in the winter. Pens are partitioned with the same 4-inch concrete block as the perimeter foundation, and light wood framing with poultry wire above. Each pen has a door, so two separate flocks can be maintained if desired. The door to each pen is sized to swing into blocking position to keep the flock out of the greenhouse growing spaces, though the birds have daytime access in the other direction onto the heavily mulched yard outside. Note the solid tops to the pens, which provide space for storage or for trays of transplants. Note as well the plywood covers over the vermicomposting bins, and the all-important vertical bracing.
